L&L: Tell us a little bit about you & your business.

Together with my husband, John, we’ve been in the wedding business for 12 years. It was kind of a happenstance sort of thing. Some acquaintances asked if they could get married at the farm and we had so much fun, we kept doing it. Broadturn Farm is a 434 acre property owned by the Scarborough Land Trust. We rent the land to run our business, which primarily consists of growing organic produce and cut flowers. We host weddings, use our food and flowers and gathered goodness from the farm for events here and around the region. We love design work with an ephemeral nature. The farm has an apprenticeship program for training new farmers and a children’s program for planting the seed of sustainability. We have an amazing crew of farmers, educators and designers to round out the team. Our mission is to build relationships with our community while sharing the value of an authentic connection to sustainable agriculture!

 L&L: Describe the range of services you offer.
We love adding a little more beauty to what is an already special day with floral and design work that is made up primarily of material we grow and gather. We travel far and wide with our van full of farm goodness to dress up tables and arbors and mantles. We love to fill people’s arm with flowers and watch them celebrate. When we are at the farm, we host weddings and special events here that allow clients to embrace their values of supporting local agriculture. Guests at the farm experience a menu that uses our organic produce and sit at tables full of blooms grown in our fields. It’s relaxed, authentic and full of meaning.

L&L: What is one thing you would say makes your business unique in the industry?
Our grown and gathered florals evoke the energy of our untended gardens, whisps of this and that and little moments of special can be found in each arrangement. Our farm events bring families into the fold, they become part of the farm community and part of our farm family. They visit us once their own babies are born and when their grandmother passes, they call us for flowers. Our goal is to build community around the work we do by creating special relationships with as many clients as possible. We’re in it for the relationships… the flowers are ephemeral.

 L&L: What are some of your favorite venues and vendors you enjoy working with in the area?
After 12 years of being in this business, we have met so many amazing and talented folks! Maine is full of stellar caterers and planners and photographers. I am partial to caterers who support the farm by purchasing produce from us regularly. These include: Aurora Provisions, Dandelion Catering and Bread and Butter.

 L&L: How far in advance do couples usually book you for their wedding day?
For flowers: the farming season is wild and my focus is usually on the current season from May-September. I recommend couples reach out to me from late September onward as things tend to quiet after the first frost and I have some space in the day to connect. For the venue: Call anytime! Visits are ideal when the farm isn’t covered in snow but we are happy to slip on some snowshoes and take a tour with an adventurous family.
