Joe Farren

L&L: Tell us a little bit about you & your business.

I got into doing weddings back in 2004 when couples would approach me at live music gigs and ask if I’d perform at their weddings. After doing a few ceremonies and cocktail hours I decided to add DJing and I’ve never looked back. Couples that are on the fence about hiring a band versus a DJ often book my services because I’m able to provide a balance of the two and at a lower cost compared to a full band. I typically play live for ceremonies, cocktail and dinner hours before switching over to DJ mode for the dance portion the evening. Being trained in both classical and popular styles of music and by playing both piano and guitar, I can offer a pretty wide variety of music to choose from for my clients. I even learn songs for couples upon request.

L&L: What is one thing you would say makes your business unique in the industry?

Being able to offer live music as a DJ. My clients appreciate having one person in charge of all their music needs. I’m very organized and punctual too. Over the years I’ve put together a wedding planner packet that all my clients fill out after securing my services. It walks them through everything they need to know and provides me with the details I need to plan for their special day. I know planning a wedding gets stressful and time consuming for couples, so I try to make the music part as easy and straightforward as I can for them.

L&L: What are some of your favorite venues and vendors you enjoy working with in the area?

New England has so many wonderful venues. I really enjoy the old farm houses turned wedding venues we have to offer. The acoustics in those rooms are amazing for playing live.

L&L: How far in advance do couples usually book you for their wedding day?

2 to 24 months. It’s all over the place. For Saturday availability, the sooner the better as far as securing my services.

L&L: How do most clients find you?

Word of mouth for sure. I grew up in the Portland area and have had tons of exposure as a musician before even getting into the wedding business. I advertise online and do the occasional bridal show, but it’s usually word of mouth from old clients or from vendors I’ve worked with that drives traffic to my website.

L&L: What is the most memorable wedding you’ve worked at and why?

I’ve worked so many fun and beautiful weddings over the years. I don’t know where to begin. Do you want the romantic stuff or the dirt?! haha. I love being a part of a couple’s special day and take it very seriously. It’s great and satisfying when everything just falls into place. It’s nice to be a part of something memorable and meaningful to a young couple’s life. For the fun answer, I did work a Jewish wedding once where guests kept buying the rabbi shots. He was cutting the rug on the dance floor all night!
