Wedding Quotes or Poem Ideas

June 10 • 2015

Words that convey love and commitment are the keystone of any wedding ceremony. Whether you plan to write your own vows or rely on the romantic rhymes of others, here are some sources of inspiration.

Perhaps a favorite song best expresses how you feel. You may want to have someone read a poem during your wedding. You could also use a short reading or quote from a book or play.

Consider the most important idea that you and your partner want to convey to each other and your guests. For example, do you want a religious feel to your wedding? If so, look to the classic Bible readings about love and marriage like 1 Corinthians 13 or Mark 10:6-9. Visit Colossians 3:12-17 for a reading about how to live life and love.

Maybe you’re both more philosophical. In that case, you may want to look into the work of Kahil Gibran. “The Prophet” offers some insights into marriage and children that could make a nice reading for your wedding. E.E. Cummings writes a sweet poem about love called “I Carry Your Heart” that might be great to quote.

You and your partner may want to consider sharing your own love letters during the wedding. Famous love letters can be a great source of inspiration. For some heartfelt ideas and inspiration you can read Johnny Cash’s letter to his wife June Carter Cash on her 65th birthday in 1994.

For those who want a more classic feel, you might consider using a verse from Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s poem “How Do I Love Thee” also offers some beautiful passages that could be incorporated into the wedding. These are also both great sources of material to help you write your own classic wedding poem.

If you’re still at a loss, here’s a sweet poem called “The One” by an anonymous author that may help you.

“When the one whose hand you’re holding, is the one who holds your heart,

When the one whose eyes you gaze into give your hopes and dreams their start,

When the one you think of first and last is the one who holds you tight,

And the things you plan together make the whole world seem just right,
When the one whom you believe in puts their faith and trust in you,

You’ve found the one and only love you’ll share your whole life through.“
