Choosing Your First Dance Song

Your officially husband and wife and you are about to be announced in for the first time as Mr. & Mrs. what song will represent your relationship? The first dance song can really tell the story of your romance, both as it was and especially how it is, so many couples sift through a bunch of different tunes to make sure they pick the absolute right one. Since the first dance can also reveal whether or not you feel comfortable dancing in front of, well, everyone you care about, it’s also important to pick one with a beat you can keep up with. Whether fast or slow, traditional or non, the first dance song should be something you can relax into and enjoy. Here are a few of my favorites, grouped by the style of the couple.

 Romantic

You’re all about wine and roses and staring dreamily into each other’s eyes. So sway and stare to “When I Fall In Love” by Nat King Cole, “At Last” by Etta James, or “Bless the Broken Road” by Selah.

 Traditionalist

You love the classics and the pomp and circumstance of a traditional ceremony. You might want to put Elvis’s “I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You”, Casablanca’s signature “As Time Goes By”, and Frank Sinatra’s “The Best Is Yet To Come” on your short list.

 Jokers

You want a song that will be remembered for poking fun at yourselves, or the ceremony, or convention, or everything put together. You might laugh at Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust”, Aquabats “Lovers of Loving Love,” or Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty’s “You’re the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly (But I Love You Just the Same)”.

 Free spirits

You eschew tradition and want to be all alt about most things on your wedding day. But you like the idea of the first dance, as long as the music is cool and quirky. Try

“Stillness is the Move” by the Dirty Projectors, Cat Powers’s version of “Sea of Love”, or Maine’s beloved (and soulful) Ray Lamontagne’s “Hold You In My Arms”.
