The love story of Ali and Steve

Ali and Steve

6.29.12

The Inn on Peaks Island ~ Maine

How they met, in Steve’s words:
We met online. We were both hesitant to try it, and we both had minimal success and a lot of bad dates because of it. But we met, and chatted, and became friends on Facebook, and finally decided to meet. We decided to have a drink at the Armory, and that turned into three hours. Two days later we met for lunch, and ended up spending the afternoon together. I moved back to Maine about two weeks later, and we went on our third “real date.” After that, we didn’t spend a night apart again.

The proposal:
Ali knew this was coming, so it was very important to throw her off track. I threw some misdirection in, by asking her cousin Kristin to “slip” and let Ali know that I was inquiring about her on-call schedule for New Year’s Eve. Get her thinking a few weeks out, and then plan something sooner…

I created a fake dance at work: the Holiday Dance, from 6:30-8:30 pm on Dec. 22. I even made fake work calendars, and put one on the fridge at home. My boss Megan was a great resource for how to fool women. Everyone at work was in on it, so when we went to my office party there was the same fake calendar displayed where Ali would see it, and everyone knew to play along.

I purchased two massages at the Regency in Portland, and gave them to Alicia. She created a story about winning them at a school fundraiser raffle, and invited Ali. It was important to make this as much “Ali’s idea” as possible, and sure enough it worked out. Ali suggested the date and time, believing that I would be busy at work. After their massages, Alicia suggested they get a drink, and again it was “Ali’s idea” to head upstairs to the Armory. On the way in she even said to Alicia “Did you know that Steve and I met here?”

I had cleared out the section of the bar where we met (annoying a number of patrons, but whatever) and the bartenders were in on it. Ali started crying when she saw me; we had successfully fooled her! I did my thing and the bartenders brought out champagne. Alicia took some photos of the event. It was honestly one of the best experiences of my life.
