Will you cry during the father/daughter dance?
Jason Sandifer/emilie inc. photography

Are you and your sweetheart anxiously awaiting your first dance as a married couple…but you have no idea what song you’ll choose?

You’re not alone. 70 percent of couples plan to include the first dance tradition at their reception, but only 8 percent have ‘a song’ like in the movies. That’s according to a new survey by GigMasters, a wedding entertainment and booking service, which polled about 700 engaged and recently married couples.

The survey also asked couples about other traditions and tear-jerking moments:

 • 60 percent of couples admitted they are most worried that their guests won’t dance or will be bored at the reception
 • More than 80 percent of couples expected to shed a few tears at some point during the wedding, with the walk down the aisle and vow exchange topping the list. Nearly 40 percent of grooms expected to cry during the I Dos.
 • A fair number of brides expect to cry during the first dance, but many more thought the father-daughter dance would make them weepy
 • A third of brides and grooms “hate” the idea of the garter toss and don’t plan to do it
 • Plenty of couples fret over the big day running smoothly, but 64 percent of brides and grooms said they never or almost never had a nightmare about the wedding.

Interesting tidbits, but we all know that what we expect to happen at our wedding might differ from what actually happens on the big day. We haven’t seen any polls asking couples if they expect an aunt to get tipsy and make a scene or if they anticipate the bridal party busting out a surprise choreographed dance. You just never know.
