One might assume that all wedding vendors are nice given a career centered around love. Kate Martin is no exception. She’s wonderfully grounded, like you want to gab with her for hours and stroll in her garden and talk about her beautiful boy. As a planner, she’s clearly very organized. And has great taste. And is reliable. So therefore, we felt we must share a bit of her with you here on Love and Lobster. Enjoy an inside peek at Beautiful Days.
L&L: Tell us a little about you and the history of Beautiful Days.
BEAUTIFUL: About eight years ago some of my nearest and dearest friends and my sister were all planning weddings around the same time and each one came to me for help and advice. I loved being a part of planning the decor, figuring out the flow and floor plan, playing with the flowers and giving advice. I have a background in interior design and project management, have worked in high end restaurants, been a gardener, worked in photography and have always loved live music and a great party! It seemed like my past experiences and passions served being a part of the wedding world so I dove in!
L&L: What sort of services do you provide?
BEAUTIFUL: Event planning, event design, florals, decor and decorative lighting. Beautiful Days also creates custom welcome bags, favors, and anything else we can dream up!
L&L: Where is your favorite spot in Maine and why?
BEAUTIFUL: Oh boy that’s a tough one! I do get to explore so many gorgeous places in Maine as part of my job! I’d have to say that in the summer it has to be York Harbor beach with my son – the perfect beach for little ones and only 20 minutes from the house! And I discovered Pemaquid Point this summer – such a cool, low key area to explore and escape to for a few days!
L&L: When you’re not planning or attending events, what do you enjoy doing?
BEAUTIFUL: I spend as much time as possible in my garden. I love having flowers to cut and include in my client’s arrangements and there is nothing more satisfying than eating fresh vegetables from your back yard. I am also a treasure hunting junky! I could dig around musty junk and antique shops and barn sales all day!
L&L: What is your favorite part of event planning?
BEAUTIFUL: I’d say there are two parts: One is the design process – I love working with a client to help define their vision and vibe and then figuring out all the details that will make their wedding day truly their own. The second is my role as a guide to my clients in the wedding planning process. Most of my clients are very busy in their normal day to day lives and to add on planning a wedding on top of that can be overwhelming and confusing. I want to make sure that I give my brides the best advice and share my experience in a thoughtful and professional way so that they feel supported by the work Beautiful Days does for them.
L&L: You also specialize in flowers and lighting. Tell us a little about those components.
BEAUTIFUL: Oh I just adore the flowers!!! Coming from years of tending and designing gorgeous gardens I am always amazed at the variety of color, texture and shapes that are grown. Going to the the flower market in Boston is always an adventure because you never know what you will find and in the middle of the summer you can sometimes find me at my local farmer’s field picking perfect seasonal blooms. The lighting is just another fantastic layer of an event that I have alot of fun with. Paper lanterns, custom chandeliers, trees filled with twinkle lights, starry night canopies…we play with it all! I’m currently concocting a custom piece for a photo shoot using streamers and silver tassels!!
L&L: What is the most memorable wedding you have planned and why?
BEAUTIFUL: Oh boy there have been alot over the years… weddings that included hurricanes on the horizon, super cool hair sculptress, amazing bands, beautiful settings… but today there would have to be two from this past summer because of the amazing, warm and full of love people and I walked away from both weddings knowing that me and my amazing team created some of our best work that truly embodied the spirit and vision of our clients. I guess I need to include my own wedding as well! Barefoot and on the beach surrounded by my nearest and dearest followed by a tented celebration at our home with amazing food, fresh from the ocean oyster raw bar and one of our favorite bands from New Orleans – but I have to say my mom planned most of it so all the love and credit goes to her!
L&L: When did you know that event planning would become your career?
BEAUTIFUL: The fall of 2004 – I dropped everything, put up a web site and Beautiful Days was born.
L&L: What is something that every bride and groom should know, but no one tells them?
BEAUTIFUL: Ok so I am detailed obsessed BUT when the wedding day arrives the time spent worrying about the color of ribbon for the girls bouquets or the type of napkin wrap will be forgotten so don’t stress about it from the beginning – let me do that!
L&L: What “must-see” places and eateries do you suggest to folks from out of town check out while visiting Maine?
BEAUTIFUL: Chauncey Creek Lobster Pier in Kittery Point for perfect lobster rolls, Reid State Park , the rock cairns at Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, Popham State Park Beach, a cocktail at the Contented Sole in Pemaquid Point, live music at Port City Music Hall, MC Perkins Cove in Ogunquit for a great view and fish tacos, I could honestly go on….
L&L: Thank you for giving us an inside peek into Beautiful Days. If readers want to get in touch with you, what is the best way for them to reach you?
