Ice sculptures

For many brides, the idea of an ice sculpture at a wedding brings to mind the typical frozen swan, wings outstretched and neck elegantly arched. Impressive? Sure. Appealing to every couple? Not so much.

But the art of ice carving has come a long way. Wicked Good Ice of Dover, N.H. has a repertoire of frozen creations ranging from floral centerpieces to dramatic raw bars. If you can dream it, they can carve it. For a recent bride, the company sculpted icy table numbers, while monograms and wedding dates are also becoming popular. (They even carved a bull out of ice for a birthday party — the person was, you guessed it, a Taurus).

On the functional side, Wicked Good Ice fashions tabletop ice bars, slabs of ice that rest on tables as an alternative to pricier full ice bars. Then there are champagne bottle chillers, with slots for the flutes, as well as ice luges spouting couples’ signature cocktails. Fruit, sushi or other chilled noshes on the menu? Serve them atop cubes of ice for a striking presentation.

Wicked Good Ice has traveled as far as Burlington, Vermont, Cape Cod and Bethel, Maine to deliver its carvings, crafted from locally sourced ice. They’ll set up and break down the sculpture area, and arrange the lighting or work with your venue to illuminate the piece. Hint: Direct sunlight’s not ideal, unless you don’t mind your sculpture melting on the big day, along with your loved one’s hearts.
