Cupcakes on the road

Wedding cupcake truck in Maine
Love Cupcakes

Two of the hottest trends we’re seeing on reception menus these days are cupcakes and food trucks. Now, we’re thrilled to share with you a local vendor that combines both!

Love Cupcakes is making a sweet name for itself throughout Maine serving delicious cupcakes out of a vintage 1960s travel trailer. Based in Portland, owners and newlyweds Anna and Joey Turcotte — who swapped in cupcakes for the cake at their own recent wedding — travel from Camden to Kittery dishing out their organic confections made with local ingredients.

Love Cupcakes offers traditional favorites plus a weekly special to liven things up. We’re seriously intrigued about a top-secret new flavor, a cupcake made with 100% locally caught, wait for it… lobster. They’re calling it the “Love Lobster,” so we here at L&L can’t help but root for it.

Last weekend, Love Cupcakes also added some sugar to the Maine Brewers Festival in Portland, with their IPA and stout flavored frostings. Cheers to that.

Having just opened in September, Love Cupcakes has catered one wedding so far, with another planned this month. But they’ve worked other events of all sizes, including several private functions and birthday parties. Plus, Anna and Joey plan to add a couple of set locations to their mobile route in the spring.

Anna tells us a bit more about their bakery on wheels.

The background: I have always loved the idea of owning my own business. I currently work as a social worker and love what I do, but was looking for something to do on the side that was not so emotionally charged. My mother is an amazing baker and has been baking with me for as long as I can remember. Cupcakes are a great way to incorporate a variety of recipes and techniques, plus they are super cute!

The trailer: I have some family who live in Austin, Texas, and cupcakes are incredibly popular there. There are a few cupcake vendors selling cupcakes from Airstream trailers, which is what inspired me to sell from a trailer rather than trying to set up shop in a storefront. I also really liked the mobile concept, which allows us to put Love Cupcakes on the road. After searching for a few months, we finally stumbled upon this little travel trailer. It was a trade-in at a local RV dealership, nestled way in the back. It was the “Charlie Brown Christmas Tree” of travel trailers. Water damaged, leaking roof and a nice musty smell; this was definitely the trailer for us. The pictures of our renovated Love Cupcakes trailer speak for themselves, three months of renovations and design finally paid off.

The goods: Our cupcakes have been described as decadent and incredibly moist. These are unlike any cupcakes you’ll taste. We use all local ingredients whenever possible and guarantee fresh flavor. We’ve all had those dry, flavorless cupcakes masked by an overdose of frosting. Don’t ever expect that from Love Cupcakes! Our most popular flavor is vanilla cake with vanilla butter-cream frosting a.k.a. Love Vanilla. People also love our flourless chocolate cake with salted caramel butter-cream frosting, a combination that can be created from our A La Carte menu. Usually people ask for some type of vanilla and chocolate for weddings, but we always push for some unique flavors as well. We have seasonal specials that we love to get people to try because they typically fall in love!

Love Cupcakes is happy to travel wherever they’re invited. To find out where the trailer’s headed next, visit the “Find Us” page of their website, and check out the business’ Facebook page for daily updates on new specials.
